The One Million Step Challenge!
If you've been following this little blog, you'll know that I'm always on the lookout for new ways to make walking and being more active more fun. But to be honest with you, I think I may have signed up for something a little crazy this time: the Diabetes UK One Million Step Challenge!
That's right, you read that correctly - One Million Step Challenge! From today, July 1st to September 30th, I have to rack up 1,000,000 steps (that's a lot of zeros!). On the Diabetes UK website, they say this is around 10,000 steps a day. It's actually more like 10,869 steps per day! For some people, 10,000 steps a day is not much of a challenge, and it's something that many people do in their day-to-day lives. But for someone like me who's not very active and only averages around 4,000 steps per day, this is going to be a real challenge.
I'm completely overthinking this challenge already and have been for the last week or so. I've been trying to plan, down to the last couple of hundred steps, how and when I'm going to get them in. This is how I think about most things though, so I'm not really surprised that I'm doing it with this challenge too. One thing I don't really want to be doing is getting to 11:55 PM one night and realising that I need to do more steps. On the other hand, if it does get to that stage, I can just get up and walk around the house to get my missing steps in.
To keep myself motivated, I've decided to track my progress on a big chart on my wall. I'll colour in a little bit each day as I get closer to the goal. I'm hoping that seeing the visual representation of my progress will help keep me going on days when I'm feeling lazy.
I'm a bit worried about how I'll manage on days where I am feeling unwell or just really don’t want to walk (there will be many of those days!). But I'm trying to stay positive and remember that every step counts.
I'm anxious about the challenge but also looking forward to pushing myself a little and completing what seems to be a very big number at this stage. I'm hoping that by the end of the challenge, I'll have formed some new healthy habits and maybe even lost a bit of weight.
If there are any wealthy people that somehow manage to see this post and would like to donate to Diabetes UK and sponsor me, you can find my fundraising page here. Also, I would really like to get the medal (Minimum £50 total donations) so you would be helping me out too!
I'll be updating this blog regularly with my progress, so stay tuned to see how I'm doing. Wish me luck - I'm going to need it!
